About Jim

Jim Rankin breathes in the cool, morning air as he gazes out over his farmland. It’s a bit chilly, and there’s a touch of frost in the air. It’s time to plant onions, lettuce and root crops until the weather warms up just a little. The sound of song birds and the fresh, earthy smell of spring is everywhere.

A Life on The Land

Jim operates Mountain Lakes Realty from an office at his 128-acre farm in Braxton County. Between the organic crops that he grows, the game in the wooded area of the farm and the fish in the ponds, he lives very comfortably, surrounded by the mountain panoramas he loves so much. For as long as he can remember, Jim has felt a connection to the land and nature. As far as he’s concerned, it’s in his blood. Although Jim has enjoyed success in the corporate world, the pull of the land has always been very strong for him. That’s why he settled in the mountains of West Virginia over two decades ago.

Rural Beginnings

Jim’s love of nature began early. He grew up in rural Western Pennsylvania, an only child of two working parents. Throughout his boyhood, as today, he hunted, fished and explored the woods to his heart’s content. From the first through eighth grade, he attended school in a two-room country schoolhouse. Jim will he admit he was not the most-dedicated student, but his unending interest in nature and the outdoors still managed to lead him first to a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, then on to a Master’s degree in Environmental Science. For several years, he taught Biology and science in public schools, but Jim didn’t like city living. Thus, Jim embarked on an long and successful career as an outside salesperson with a major consumer electronics corporation. It was these travels that introduced him to the true beauty of West Virginia.

The Pull of Nature

For all of Jim’s success, he never stopped yearning for a return to a simpler life, where he could once again enjoy the beauty and serenity of the outdoors. When he settled for good in West Virginia, he came full circle, and it was only natural for Jim to turn his love for the land into a successful real estate career. For over 20 years, he has found his greatest satisfaction in sharing his insight and knowledge of the Kanawha Valley and Teays Valley with a broad range of people. Now Jim is bringing his expertise to the Mountain Lakes Region of Central West Virginia.
